Police Seen All Over NHIS Building As Suspended Executive Secretary Spoils For War

NHIS, Executive Secretary, Usman Yusuf, News, Police,
The unfolding war brewing at the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has led to the invasion of their premises in Abuja by Armed mobile policemen on Monday.

A detachment of gun-toting policemen and Civil Defence Corps officers took over the premises following the discovery of a plan by the suspended Executive Secretary, Prof Yusuf Usman, to forcibly resume duties there with the aid of a rented crowd, SaharaReporters writes.

The security operatives were stationed at strategic locations in the building while staff were subjected to security checks at the start of work.

Reeling from his unceremonious removal on charges of fraud and nepotism, the embattled Prof Yusuf had reportedly threatened to storm the office with the protesters and loyalists in a potential showdown with the Acting Executive Secretary who assumed the position this morning.

The situation was exacerbated when both junior and senior staff of the organization swore to resist his forceful takeover of office.

Prof Yusuf has been in the spotlight after a pro-transparency group, United Youths Alliance Against Corruption, filed a petition accusing him of nepotism and contract fraud of over N1bn.

This drew the intervention of the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, who directed him to hand over to the most senior officer and proceed on three months suspension.

But he remained defiant, arguing that he could only be removed from office by the President under the circumstances specified in the NHIS Act.
